There is an Iowa Law requiring incoming third graders to have their vision checked. Good vision directly contributes to a child’s ability to learn while in school. The law states – to be valid, a minimum of one child screening shall be performed no earlier than one year prior to the date of enrollment in third grade and no later than 6 months after the date of the child’s enrollment in third grade.

The school nurse will need a copy of your child’s vision screening results. The vision check may be performed as part of the child’s physical exam at your doctor’s office rather than by an eye doctor if you prefer.
