Dear Families and Community:

Knowing where you are and where you want to go is a key part of growth and improvement. Our district regularly uses education data to tell us how our students are progressing and to adjust instruction for better results.

The state has released the 2017 Iowa School Report Card information. This web-based tool provides a snapshot of every Iowa public school's performance on certain educational measures, such as student proficiency rates in math and reading, student academic growth, narrowing achievement gaps among students, college and career readiness, student attendance, graduation rates and staff retention.

The goal of the Iowa School Report Card is to present certain academic and education data that makes it easy for the public to find and understand. The Iowa Department of Education developed this tool in response to a 2013 legislative requirement (House File 215).

We are excited to share at Mason Cit Community School District five buildings experienced growth. Harding Elementary and Hoover Elementary moved from a rating of "Needs Improvement" to "Acceptable", while Mason City High School (Acceptable), Lincoln Intermediate (Needs Improvement) and Roosevelt Elementary (Needs Improvement) remained at the same rating but experienced growth in the overall score. John Adams Middle School (Acceptable) and Jefferson Elementary (Commendable) experienced a small decline in their overall score but remained at the same rating.

The Iowa School Report Card will add to conversations in our community about the work under way to prepare students for success and to help them achieve their full potential. This work includes a focus on the following measures of student performance:

  • Annual expected growth
  • College and Career Readiness
  • Closing the gap

The Mason City Community School District encourages our families and our community to explore the information provided in the Iowa School Report Card. Please do not hesitate to ask questions about our district's improvement efforts, and ask what you can do to support our teachers and students.
