Transportation Annual Notice - Video Cameras on School District Buses
Each year, the Board reviews the information related to video cameras on school district buses. The Board reviewed the policy and regulations at the regular meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, August 17, 2015, and provides the following notice:
The mason City Community School District Board of Directors has authorized the use of video cameras on school district buses. The video cameras will be used to monitor student behavior to maintain order on the school buses to promote and maintain a safe environment. Students and parents are hereby notified that the content of the videotapes may be used in a student disciplinary proceeding. The content of the videotapes are confidential student records and will be retained with other student records. Videotapes will only be retained if necessary for use in a student disciplinary proceeding or other matter as determined necessary by the administration.
Mason City Alternative School Environmental Science Program Honored
The Iowa Urban Tree Council recognized the Mason City Alternative Students Environmental Science Program as an Outstanding Youth Project/Program for 2014. The award was presented at the 25th Annual Urban Forestry Awards Luncheon on April 9. The success of this program is due in large part to the unique partnership between the City of Mason City, the Mason City Schools alternative school students, Trees Forever, and Alliant Energy. 4-Year-Old Preschool Program Expanding at Mason City Community School District
The Mason City Community School District is expanding its 4-Year-Old Preschool Program for the 2015-2016 school year and is accepting applications at this time. This quality preschool program is offered, at no cost to families, for children who will be four years-of-age prior to September 15, 2015. Proof of child’s age is required-birth certificate preferred.

Early Literacy Focus for Iowa - Letter from Department of Education Director Brad Buck
Reading is essential to student success in school and in life. The Iowa Department of Education Director Brad Buck has requested district's assistance in sharing information with families about early literacy efforts in Iowa. New Website Feature - THE VIRTUAL BACKPACK
The Mason City Community School District is offering a new feature on their website – “The Virtual Backpack.” The school district is a part of the larger community in which it carries out its education mission. The school district has been a conduit for providing information by permitting distribution of non-school materials to inform students and their families of youth-related programs or activities, and of events that intend to improve the health, education or welfare of students according to Board policy.
Mason City Community School district has implemented a “green” approach for distributing information from school sponsored activities and flyers from non-school community organizations to which approval is granted.
